Pros and Cons of Alexa ranking
Well. Many of our friends mailed us in the past 1 week to know about our absence in this blog. I thank them all for giving such a wonderful support to us. There is a strong reason behind this absence. Yes, we did a quick research on Alexa ranking.
Alexa – known for its popular ranking system has many pros and cons. So here are those pros and cons of Alexa ranking system.
Pros of Alexa ranking:
- Alexa ranking gives a boost to beginners who have started their blog or website.
- It is considered as one of the most popular ranking system.
- Website’s popularity is determined using this ranking system in these days.
- Advertisers prefer this ranking system in these days.
Cons of Alexa ranking:
- Alexa ranking is not accurate.
- The ranking system depends highly on Alexa toolbar usage report.
- Anyone can cheat this ranking system very easily.
- This doesn’t even consider SEO as a factor when ranking a website.

I’m personally not very fond of Alexa and it is not until recently I have started to check my stats.

Alexa ranking is important to attract advertisers. I just installed Alexa Toolbar to see how much it improves my ranking.
It is true that you can cheat Alexa but it needs time and not everyone has time for that.

For me Alexa is reliable, bcz its increasing day after day, in the very first month i got a PR of 3, with less traffic, but now its decreased to ” 2 “, but the page views increased 1000 %
.

I think you misunderstood between PageRank and Alexa rank. If Alexa rank is increasing means, we can’t believe that a website is getting popular.

You got some good points there Karthik. The other Con of Alexa is that if your audience is from one country only then your never going to improve your overall ranking.

Thanks buddy. You got a good point. What happens here is Alexa ranking for that particular country will improve more than your overall ranking. Overall, Alexa is worst.

I’m not sure what you mean here. A website’s popularity isn’t a statistic…

Sadly, this is true.

Without having code on a website, it is impossible to get accurate traffic information on it.

It depends entirely on toolbar usage. I’m pretty sure they extrapolate the data.

This is true for just about any traffic ranking.
7. This doesn’t even consider SEO as a factor when ranking a website.
It ranks by _traffic_… why would SEO be a factor?

Thanks for all of your questions here. And here are the answers for your queries.
1. Beginners expect traffic to their blog. That’s their main motive. So they need a common platform to prove their success in blogging. Here comes the Alexa ranking. You can see that many top bloggers are still believing this inaccurate Alexa ranking.
2. Advertisers come to a website based on its popularity only. Since your answer for point 3 is true, I think you will get a clear idea now.
4. Do you mean that Alexa widget code? There is no use at all. That widget code will just show the rank. Nothing else.
5. You are correct.
6. Sure.
7. My point here is in comparison with PageRank. You can have a look on Alexa ranking. It shows Backlinks. But that is not even used in ranking.

I know if i visit my page 50 times a day my alexa rank drops from 7 lakhs to 4 lakhs. and huge boost in time.
Now i don’t bother about alexa. Alexa is most successful inaccurate way to deicide pouplarity of any website.

Karthik I still have many things to say on this .. People have many misconception about how Alexa rank your website. The fact is..alexa ranking depends on many things :
* How regularly your website is updates.
* Search engine traffic
* Alexa toolbar
* Alexa widget
Though most imp factor which determine alexa ranking are 1st two.

I will not agree with your points buddy. Because there is nothing to deal with that Alexa widget. You can see the code of the widget and it is just for showing the website rank and not for ranking purpose.
And 1st point may be true but not sure on it.
And regarding your point on SE traffic, i need explanation from you about that. Can you?

Its indeed true that Alexa ranking is a very crude way to analyze your Blog!
Let me make it clear, I have seen all crap blogs making it to the top 1,00,000 of Alexa. They are just not visited by anyone other than a few Alexa tool bar members.

You got the perfect point. As you have said, I am worried to see such crap blogs in which the blogger don’t even have the perfect thing to be a blogger claims that he is in top ranking because of that imperfect Alexa ranking.

I like checking my Alexa ranking from time to time, I don’t use my blog to make money online, so seeing an increase offers as self gratification once and a while.

Normally I won’t care much about Alexa ranking if I am an advertiser. What else will I do is that I will care about Traffic stats.

Alexa is a really goofy tool. I’ve had days were I ranked in the 40,000s with only 70 pageviews and other days where I ranked 50,000 with 700.
I’m not sure how I got 10 times as many pageviews, but ranked 10,000 worse.
I also think if you view pages through frames like Stumble, Digg, or Hootsuite, Alexa doesn’t credit the pageview.
I’ve pretty much given up on my Alexa rank at this point. It’ll be helpful if I ever try to get monthly paid sponsors, but I think other analytics are better.

I have to share something with you Blake. You can’t expect that increasing pageviews will lead to increase in Alexa ranking too. Because, you have to see how well your competitors are going on. But what you said is correct. Alexa should never be trusted.
I am not sure about your info about frames. Have to look on it.
Analytics are far better than those ranking systems.
