Exclusive Interview with Andy Bailey – The man behind CommentLuv

October 20, 2009 by Karthikeyan | 56 Comments | Stumble It! Delicious Reddit Digg Technorati

No one will say that I don’t know CommentLuv – A WordPress plugin, if they know about WordPress. CommentLuv is one of the most popular WordPress plugin and is used in more than 150,000+ blogs right now. The man behind the development of CommentLuv is Andy Bailey and here he shares his experiences with us in an exclusive interview.

Andy Bailey - The man behind CommentLuv Plugin

Interview

  1. Tell about yourself.- I’m a hobby coder, I write plugins and applications to pass the time that ‘normal’ people use for watching tv, going to the pub or playing sports (because I don’t watch tv, drink alcohol or play sports). My offline life is spent running a busy Chinese takeaway and delivery business in Lancaster in the North of England. Commentluv and the Comluv site are part of my hobby time.
  2. What made you to go ahead with CommentLuv?- I wrote it as a simple plugin to add to my Fiddyp.co.uk blog, it saved me time. Instead of having to trawl through every comment authors site and find interesting posts to publish and read, I made a php script to do it for me. The rest, as they say is history!
  3. CommentLuv is using it’s own API for retrieving the RSS feed. Why don’t you add an inbuilt API in the plugin for doing the same? - I wrote the API because a lot of the sites that wanted to use the plugin didn’t have things like cURL enabled in their hosting package and so they couldn’t use it, adding the AJAX meant I could get the visitors browser to do the fetching from my server which opened up platforms like Blogger and other non-hosted solutions where users weren’t able to upload their own plugins or execute php scripts. There was also the opportunity to collect stats on who gets the most comments and who gets the most clicks which people seem to like. Everyone loves stats right? :)
  4. How did you manage to offer free blog service in ComLuv? - The free blog service on ComLuv is relatively new, I originally designed a blog using WordPress to act as the portal for all the users to register their urls so they could receive 10 links instead of just the most recent one. Since upgrading the API and learning some things about WordPress Mu (the multi user version), I thought it would be nice to offer the people that couldn’t afford hosting or didn’t know how to use FTP to transfer a bunch of files a way to have their own blog with CommentLuv on it all without worrying about installing software, updating it or even getting their own hosting.
  5. Are you into blogging? If yes, share about your blog and it’s details. If not, tell us why. - I have been blogging for some years, my first one was to chronicle the things I did with a MLM company selling lottery syndicate positions. I did pretty well with the company and would always get asked questions that I would have to answer again and again. Having a blog meant I could point those people to the post I made answering their question and also have an outlet to write the things I wanted to do. That particular blog has finished now but the parent site (www.teamplaylotto.com) is still running. My blog for the past few years has been http://fiddyp.co.uk which I use to write about whatever is on my mind. It’s a way  for me to journal my thoughts on lots of different subjects and I enjoy keeping it up to date with what I’m doing online.
  6. Are you the only person behind the development of CommentLuv? - I am the sole coder, designer, support and money man. I pay for the server and anything else with my own money. It’s my hobby and is only just starting to be an expensive one! If I didn’t spend my money on ComLuv then I’d probably learn drinking and go to the pub every day like most of my friends :-)
  7. Tell some of your favorite blogs. - I see literally thousands of blogs each week but I always seem to go back to the same ones, http://psychicgeek.com and http://hotfessional.com because I get to take a peek into someones personal life, I like personal blogs because I spend so much time on technical things and on work that it’s nice to see how people with personal lives live! I visit http://www.gospelrhys.co.uk/ too because he’s a funny Welshman and one of my first regularly visited blogs. There’s a whole bunch more that I visit when I see interesting last blog posts on the sites that use the plugin too. Far too many to list here!
  8. How did you market CommentLuv? - I didn’t. I just wrote it and made it available for people to use. The fact that people that see it and like it is all the marketing it has had. The blogs that have the little badge on it generate so much traffic that I’ve not thought about trying to advertise it.
  9. The idea behind “TwitterLink Comments”? - Twitterlink comments followed the same pattern as CommentLuv, I wanted an easy way to put peoples twitter ID in with their comments. There’s a huge amount of plugins that help you promote yourself on twitter by tweeting your latest post but they’re no use to you  if no one is following you so, I wanted a way to help people get followers without resorting to ‘black hat’ methods as well as encourage people to comment on posts. One way to do that is provide the follow link with their comment which lets other users see what the person is about by reading their comment and if they like what they read, they can follow them. simple.
  10. What’s your future plan? - My future plan is to get ComLuv.com to pay for itself and perhaps even earn me some money. It probably will, there’s enough traffic and registered users that opportunities will arise but I’m in no big hurry, I’m happy to continue to write plugins that make bloggers life easier and provide a site to make blogging easier. It’s my hobby and I enjoy it, if it gets too expensive or boring then I’ll find a new hobby (or learn to drink beer by the pint).
