10 Design Practices to follow in your Website / Blog

After seeing some bad design practices in many blogs and websites, I am writing this article here. Are you tired of changing so many designs in your website? If yes, you should have a look on this article to make sure that you will never change the design again and again.

10 Design Practices to follow in your Website / Blog

Design practices to follow

I have added those best practices to follow in your website design as 10 points. They are:

  1. Avoid using high contrast colors in your website.
  2. Avoid mixing up of unmatched colors in your website.
  3. If you are planning for a transparent logo, try to use PNG image format rather than using GIF image format.
  4. If your website logo is going to be placed over a plain background, try to avoid using transparent logo.
  5. Avoid using fancy fonts everywhere in your website.
  6. Emphasize the important content in your website.
  7. Avoid too many CSS style additions for anchor links. Not only for links.
  8. Avoid using flash (swf) files for your website logo.
  9. Avoid using DHTML tricks in your website since it is not supported by many browsers.
  10. Avoid using too big images as your website background.
There are some more points too. I prefer this is enough to cover here. Hope you like it.

What are you thinking right now? Share with us. Definitely yours will be wonderful than mine!

    I am a firm believer of KISS (keep it simple stupid)

    The more you try to tweak the design…the more complex it becomes in the users end.Designing is a Lifelong process and if you try to make it perfect that day may never come.i think that bloggers should concentrate on content and do minor tweaks in design when necessary.testing is also a useful part of design that must be done after every change you make.Goood post karthik !

    What exactly do you mean by don’t put a transparent logo over a plain background? Any reason in particular? I just designed a new logo (it isn’t a final version, but it’s enough to make my website look 10x more clean). I’m not sure if I’m going against your recommended practice. What do you think?

      @Blake @ Props Blog Reviews,
      Why I told that is simple. For example, you have a plain background header in blue color, then you can simply design a logo with the same background color. Because, transparent logos occupy some more size and most probably you will use PNG format. PNG files need some javascript file for IE 6 to load properly.

      If you are having a gradient header means, then go for transparent logos like what I have here.

      Reply

      • Blake @ Props Blog Reviews

        Oh, so it’s mostly for compatibility issues. One of the reasons I like having the transparent logo is that I’m a little finicky on colors. If I end up changing the background my logo is on 2 or 3 times in the next 6 months, I don’t want to have to redesign my logo each time. Then again, I’ll probably rework my logo if I’m changing up my colors…

          @Blake,
          Yes Of course. But since you the editable logo design file like PSD file, you can change the color easily. It exactly depends on your needs only.
